DEVIL'S ADVOCATE

It's time to examine the impact of making marijuana a legal alternative to alcohol.
Virtually every organization and government agency dedicated to researching and preventing sexual violence has identified alcohol as a major contributing factor to incidents of sexual assault and date rape. Marijuana, on the other hand, has never been found to contribute to these problems. If our government is serious about preventing sexual violence, it must begin to consider the possibility that marijuana prohibition is driving people to drink and fueling incidents of sexual assault and date rape. We need your help!

We are calling on the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control (NCIPC) to begin examining the effect of marijuana prohibition on the prevalence of sexual violence, and exploring the possibility that alcohol-related assaults could be reduced if marijuana becomes a legal alternative to alcohol. The NCIPC is a division within the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that is responsible for studying the factors that contribute to sexual violence and investigating new strategies for prevention. It has no excuse for continuing to ignore this potentially viable solution to an exceptionally significant problem.

New Cannabis Legislation
The WA premier Mr. Colin Barnett is proposing new legislation that will:

  • Allow prosecution of those caught in possession of 10gm of Cannabis (at present 30gm)
  • Allow subsequent offences for possession to be prosecuted as criminal offences.
  • Allow people to be prosecuted for cultivating cannabis plants (at present two plants per person per household are allowed.
  • Make it illegal for cannabis smoking implements to be sold to anyone (it is presently only an offence to sell to children)
  • Increase fines for the sale of smoking implements - $5000 for sale of a bong to an adult, $10,000 for sale to a minor.
  • Replace the CIN (Cannabis Infringement Notice) scheme with CIRS (Cannabis Intervention Requirement Scheme)
